`The Croods' Left An Indelible Mark on The Wall, Opening at No. 1 With an Estimated $44.7 Million

The caveman comedy ``The Croods'' left an indelible mark on the wall, opening at No. 1 with an estimated $44.7 million.

The 3-D adventure from DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox features a voice cast including Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone and Catherine Keener. They play a prehistoric family encountering danger and strange new creatures when they're forced to find a new cave.

Opening strongly in second place with $30.5 million was ``Olympus Has Fallen,'' an action thriller from ``Training Day'' director Antoine Fuqua in which North Korean terrorists take over the White House. Gerard Butler, as a secret service agent, leads an all-star cast that includes Aaron Eckhart as the president, Morgan Freeman and Angela Bassett.

``The Croods'' has now made $108 million worldwide, also opening this weekend in Russia, the United Kingdom, Germany and Spain. In the United States, it's the only game in town as far as animated films for the whole family, and it will continue to be so as kids head out of school for spring break over the next couple of weeks.

``It's a terrific crowd-pleaser, it got an A CinemaScore and an A-plus with audiences under 18, which leads me to believe a lot of kids loved the movie,'' said Anne Globe, chief marketing officer for DreamWorks Animation.

Chris Aronson, president of domestic distribution for 20th Century Fox, said ``The Croods'' had a stronger opening than the $40 million the studio had projected.

``To come in at the $45 million mark, ahead of `How to Train Your Dragon,' which was another terrific movie from DreamWorks Animation, is a great start to the spring holiday,'' Aronson said.

``Olympus Has Fallen'' also opened higher than expectations _ much higher _ given that FilmDistrict figured it would end up somewhere in the under-$20 million range, said president of distribution Jim Orr.

This is by far the biggest debut for the independent distributor, which was just founded in September 2010; the previous best was the $14.3 million the ``Red Dawn'' remake made over last year's Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

``Millennium Films and Antoine Fuqua delivered a brilliant, action-packed, serious thriller with an all-star cast led by Gerard Butler, and the word of mouth seems to be terrific,'' said Orr.

``It not only exceeded all our pre-weekend estimates, as the weekend has gone on, it's gotten better.

This is the first action thriller in a while that's gotten an A-minus CinemaScore, so it's obvious that people are talking about it and enjoying it.''

This one-two punch of ``Croods'' and ``Olympus'' _ two movies that appealed to two very different audiences _ was much-needed at the box office, which is down 13 percent from the same period last year, said Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst for Hollywood.com.

``I was really surprised by `Olympus.' This year, the R-rated action films have all fallen flat,'' Dergarabedian said, including ``The Last Stand'' and ``Parker.'' `'The marketing was good. Gerard Butler _ he's the real deal, he looks the part and everything. And the theme of the movie, the fact that the president is under siege _ it worked on `Air Force One.'

There's something about that theme that works for audiences.'' But this weekend's haul is down 34 percent from the same weekend a year ago, when the juggernaut of ``The Hunger Games'' debuted.

It made a whopping $152.5 million in its opening, which is more than all the films in theaters combined will have made this weekend.

Among the other new films this weekend, the Tina Fey-Paul Rudd college comedy ``Admission'' from Focus Features opened in fifth place with just $6.4 million.

But the buzzed-about ``Spring Breakers'' from A24 Films, featuring Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens as hard-partying college girls, did well in its first nationwide expansion. It made $5 million on 1,104 screens for a total of $5.4 million over the past two weeks.

Nothing really huge is on the horizon to give the box office a boost until ``Iron Man 3'' kicks off the summer movie season on May 3, Dergarabedian said. But the strong showing for ``Olympus Has Fallen'' could bode well for the sequel ``G.I. Joe: Retaliation'' next weekend.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com.

Where available, latest international numbers are included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. ``The Croods,'' $44.7 million.

2. ``Olympus Has Fallen,'' $30.5 million.

3. ``Oz the Great and Powerful,'' $22 million.

4. ``The Call,'' $8.7 million.

5. ``Admission,'' $6.4 million.

6. ``Spring Breakers,'' $5 million.

7. ``The Incredible Burt Wonderstone,'' $4.3 million.

8. ``Jack the Giant Slayer,'' $3 million.

9. ``Identity Thief,'' $2.5 million.

10. ``Snitch,'' $1.9 million.

The 19-Year-old Singer Justin Bieber is Not A Bad Boy

Justin Bieber's grandparents want him to make amends to his fans with a free concert.

The 19-year-old singer's recent time in the UK has been marred by a public meltdown which included turning up two hours late for a show at London's O2 Arena and trying to attack a photographer.

While his grandmother Kathy, 56, doesn't believe he is a “bad boy” she does feel he has fallen in with the wrong crowd and needs to make it up to his fans in a big way.

She told the Daily Star Sunday newspaper: “I don't think for one moment this is all about him being a bad boy. He's only just turned 19 and he's still learning to cope with the pressures of fame.

“But it's worrying. You read all sorts of things about him partying and he needs to understand some of those so-called friends probably don't have his best interests at heart.

“I know he will be feeling depressed about the way things have gone in London, so maybe it would be a good idea if he were to go back there later and perform free for the fans who feel let down by him.”

Meanwhile, the Sunday People newspaper has reported his meltdown is because of his split from Selena Gomez in January after around two years together.

A source told the publication: “He simply hasn't been the same since he split from Selena. It really broke him.

“They were together for such a long time for two people so young. He hasn't quite known what to do without her.

“He is lonely. They kept each other very grounded and understood the level of fame that they both had. Now his friends know he needs their support more than ever.”

Robert Downey Jr. Talks Playing 'Iron Man'

With two solo movies and a worldwide smash team-up flick under his belt as the armored Avenger, you’d think Robert Downey Jr. would have the whole being a superhero thing down pat. But even while shooting this summer’s “Iron Man 3,” there was still one part of the process that tested his endurance and his patience.

That would be the claustrophobia.

See, when Tony Stark is inside his armored suit, you don’t see his face behind his mask. So filmmakers invented the HUD (Heads-Up Display) view. That’s when the camera goes inside the suit, so you can see Downey’s face with all of Tony's high-tech graphics floating around him.

It’s a great solution to a sticky problem, and when you’re watching an action scene in the movies you take it as a given that the close-ups you see of Downey are happening at the same time Iron Man zooms through the skies. But that’s not the case. And Downey said creating the illusion is one of the toughest parts of the job. (You read that right: perhaps for the first time ever, an A-list, world-renown movie star feels he has too many close-ups.)

I asked Downey how many days he spent filming the HUD shots during his four films as Iron Man. His sarcastic reply? “Not enough for my tastes.”

When asked if the process--which involves him alone in front of a blank background with a camera in his face--got easier, he said, “No, it didn’t,” and went on to explain why it was so tough for him.

Downey compared it to the process of recording voice-overs for commercials, a job he said he loves, “but you wouldn't know from my disposition every time I have to go in and work, because it's like irritation therapy.” As an actor, Downey thrives on interacting with his costars and being physical, and filming the HUD shots requires him being isolated and immobile.

“When you do the HUD work, usually it's kind of the last thing in the schedule,” Downey said. “And you're going back and essentially living the movie again in close-up, tired.”

Basically, Downey has to relive all of the action scenes in the movie they already shot and deliver the same level of intensity even though he’s standing still and there’s nothing for him to actually react to. That includes performing some of his most emotional scenes, like in “The Avengers” when he is unable to contact Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow) while he is flying to what he believes will be his death.

Still, Downey did admit that going back to shoot the HUD segments at the end of production gives the team the ability to refine and improve scenes. “We had the luxury of being efficient enough to sometimes say, ‘Stop, stop. Wait a second. Let's not just shoot these next 20 lines. Let's look at the scene and how can we make it a little better or different.’”

Downey did say that it has gotten easier over time to actually wear the physical Iron Man suit. He said the version he wears in the new movie is “lighter; it's more flexible.” Still, he made sure to clarify that “easier” was not the same thing as “easy.” He joked, “There is no comfortable version of it, so it's kind of like, ‘Hey, don’t you think these bamboo shoots are actually a little less rough on the cuticle until they get down to the nerve?’”

You’ll get to see how all of Downey’s hard work and irritation paid off when the final trailer for “Iron Man 3” lands tomorrow, March 5, at noon ET/9 a.m. PT exclusively here on Yahoo! Movies.

‘Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 2′ takes 7 Razzie Awards including Worst Picture

The 33rd Annual Razzie Awards saluting the worst Hollywood had to offer in 2012 were handed out Saturday, the night before the Oscars. And in a surprise move that's sure to raise the hackles of its legion of fans, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" was given seven awards, including Worst Picture. The one blockbuster hit to be nominated, "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" beat out the box-office bombs "Battleship," "That's My Boy," "A Thousand Words," and "The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure."

In addition, the final chapter of the "Twilight" series took home Worst Actress for star Kristen Stewart (she was nominated both for playing Bella Swan for "Snow White & the Huntsman"), Worst Supporting Actor for Taylor Lautner, Worst Director for Bill Condon, Worst Screen Ensemble, and Worst Remake, Rip-off or Sequel. Lautner also shared Worst Screen Couple with Mackenzie Foy, who played the half-vampire offspring Renesmee.

Kristen Stewart wasn't in attendance to accept her award in person like previous "honorees" Halle Berry (Worst Actress winner in 2004 for "Catwoman") or Sandra Bullock, who won the Razzie for Worst Actress for "All About Steve" in 2009 the night before she won the Oscar for Best Actress for "The Blind Side." Stewart is scheduled to be a presenter at tomorrow night's Academy Awards.

A few "Twilight" stars did dodge bullets in their respective categories, though. Robert Pattinson, who "lost" the Worst Actor trophy to Adam Sandler for "That's My Boy." Sandler has taken it two years running now, receiving both Worst Actor and Worst Actress last year for "Jack & Jill." Ashley Green also avoided getting the Golden Raspberry for Worst Supporting Actress. It instead went to Rihanna for her screen debut in the big-budget board game adaptation "Battleship."

Perhaps the luckiest man of the night was Tyler Perry, who didn't win any of the six awards he was up for, including Worst Actor and Worst Actress (for "Madea's Witness Protection").

This is the first time a "Twilight" film has been given the Razzie for Worst Picture, though previous installments "Eclipse" and "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" were nominated. And the piling on "Part 2" with 7 awards does seem a little unfair. The reviews weren't that bad for this last installment, with RottenTomatoes giving it a 48% positive (just down from the original film's 49%, but a big improvement over the 24% "Part 1" received). In comparison, Eddie Murphy's "A Thousand Words" has a 0% positive rating. Perhaps the Razzies felt that since they wouldn't have another chance to sock it to the "Twilight" series, they really wanted to make it count.

Seeing as how "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" has already made $828 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing installment of the series (which has earned over $3.3 billion at the box office), it seems the fans have already made their opinion about the quality of the movie known.

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" will be out on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital download on March 2.

Total Recall Remake: Why?

I have a bad feeling about the remake of "Total Recall," the sci-fi thriller that was adapted from Philip K. Dick's 1966 short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale." The1990 movie, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone, was a masterpiece. (And for my money, the best thing Schwarzenegger ever made, with the possible exception of "True Lies.")

The story line hasn't changed. A factory worker, in need of a vacation, heads for a company that can implant memories in the brain. For some excitement, he chooses to adopt the life of a secret agent, but he is quickly drawn into a mystery that melds true and induced memories.

The temptation will be to make the new version -- starring Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale and Jessice Biel -- bigger and splashier, with over-the-top special effects. And judging by the trailer that's where it's headed. But one of the most appealing aspects of the original was that it was relatively simple, at least for science fiction. It left a lot to the viewer's imagination, which was appropriate for a mind-bending movie born from a short story.

The works of Dick (1928-82) have been used as the basis for many movies. Among them "Blade Runner" (based on the novel, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"), "The Adjustment Bureau" ("Adjustment Team") and "Minority Report," ("The Minority Report").

First Reviews Are in For 'The Hunger Games'

'The Hunger Games’ Movie Inspires Good Early Reviews: The first reviews are beginning to enter the long-awaited film "The Hunger Games," which opens this weekend. The story stars like Jennifer Lawrence Katniss Everdeen, who must participate in the exhibition under the auspices of the Government of the reality show that makes kids fight each other to the death of the last ever winner.

The film is based on the bestselling Susan Collins, a version of the film is intended for "Twilight" tall, with fans already created for young readers. So what do critics say about the grim adventure?

Early reviews look good. Christy Lemire writes for the Associated Press, that the scenario "adheres closely to the novel Collins," and although some trancates sublots Lemire is still praised: "The creators of" Hunger Games "was a feat difficult to handle a film that feels like an epic and intimate at once. "

Ryan Fleming, digital trends provides fans that even if the film is not "a perfect movie, it's true." And he adds: "The story pays homage to the book and sacrifices very little, and those that are made clear and legitimate purposes and not detract from the story."

Drew McWeeney, writing for the blog HitFix titled "Hunger Games", "exciting, intelligent, deeply felt film a blockbuster." And the hits on the idea Jennifer Lawrence, writes: ". Here's a pop culture phenomenon around the female character that I can fully support "

In the New York Daily News, Joe Neumaier honored by the film five stars out of five, and is directed by Gary Ross, a film based on a novel for teens light years ahead of "Twilight." "He said:" It's better and scarier than its source book, and look at our bloody rage, show-and-greeting thing is culture. "

Todd McCarthy at the Hollywood Reporter agrees that this may be the next young phenomenon, said: "This news Lionsgate is positioned as the hottest property for the teen audience for" Twilight ", and there is no reason to believe that the results at the box office won" t land around area boasted. "He adds," Jennifer Lawrence is excellent in this faithful version of the film is a very good mass bestseller. "

YouTube Enlisting Hollywood's Help

YouTube enlists big-name help to redefine channels: YouTube is bringing help to achieve the Hollywood generation of viewers are more familiar with smartphones that control the TV.

Internet giant video aims to create 25 hours of programs a day with the help of some of the biggest names in traditional television. The site owned by Google distributes his wealth among the producers, directors, producers and others using the bank $ 100 million in committed capital to start last fall. The Foundation is the largest expenditure on YouTube the original content so far.

YouTube says that it provides a foundation for the future. While the number of viewers of traditional stabilized in recent years, people are increasingly watching video on mobile phones and tablet PCs, especially in the 18 - 34-year-old demographic advertisers covet this year.

The idea is to create 96 new channels of YouTube, which are essentially artists home pages, where viewers can see current videos and click the "Subscribe" to be informed when new content is increased.

Well-funded videos to choose from a list of stars likely to be more watchable than the average cute cats and YouTube monologues webcam. YouTube relies on the fact that the massive influx of quality content will attract more revenue from advertisers, viewers often bring new and strengthen the parent web-connected TV platform Google TV.

Money attracts some of the biggest stars of television, including "Fast Five" director Justin Lin, director of the episode "Community",'' CSI "creator Anthony and Nancy Zuiker Tellem, former president of CBS Entertainment.

Zuiker is associated with horror series for YouTube, after observing the behavior of his family. His son, three pre-teens are spending more time on the phones and computers, iPads, how to watch TV these days.

"We want to take the risk, along with YouTube and roll the dice on the future," said Zuiker ". The old regime would be to fail, because everyone thinks that television is the only device that really matters and that is simply not the case."

For manufacturers the ability to create shows that are completely free to intervene in major studios. They may also be relevant with the younger crowd that visualization is increasingly moving online.

Several new channels, such as extreme sports-oriented network, and Spanish have already begun to care. YouTube hopes that they are all in place and operational by this summer.

"It was really enhance the whole ecosystem," said Alex Carloss, global head of original programming on YouTube. "We see that the portfolio (funded channels), representing the best of the best television experience in the web."

YouTube is not a Web service, the video has started to pay for original content. Netflix Inc. recently the original series "Lilyhammer" while Hulu first "battle". But a YouTube video, as a rule, less than 10 minutes, instead of setting the traditional half-hour TV commercials per hour. And apart from a few principles that control is dedicated to the artist, including those that have downloaded and when there are new episodes.

YouTubers go well with things far more severe than the middle finger that rapper MIA erupted during a break in the Super Bowl.

While on YouTube any investment is less than half what some spend on studio blockbuster, about a third of new channels have been appointed to YouTube scrappy veterans who already know how to make the Internet while keeping high production costs low.

YouTube plans to recover what it spends on subsidies through advertising revenue sharing new videos generate.

The creator of the studio, which has received money on three new channels, the funds are already full of turbo operation, which has about 160 staff spread over several buildings packed with computers and accessories in the western suburbs of Los Angeles, Culver City.

During a recent visit, the two scenes were shot in the lane. One of them was a parody of the movie trailer for Christmas. Another new series on crime van, called "If I Es, Pepe."

Maker cranks to a YouTube video about 300 each month to the skeleton of the cost of about $ 1,000 each.

Video Studio generate huge 500 million page views per month, mainly due to the impact set, which includes a summary of Ray William Johnson videos and crazy viral giants such as "epic battles in the history of rap."

Advertisers pay up to $ 10 per thousand views video ads above the content of signs, according to TubeMogul, the main buyer of advertising on YouTube for the country's largest advertisers, including Procter & Gamble Co. News Corp. movie studio 20th Century Fox.

YouTube partners have created to share about half their revenue from the site. Thus, if the Maker video to generate $ 1 or $ 2 in advertising revenue per thousand views, it would only make ends meet.

Maker co-founder Danny Zappin, who left the film school to buy a high end camera to start a career on YouTube, said it was "delicate balance" in order to maintain its share of advertising revenue in the studio is higher than the cost of video-making. An undisclosed amount he received from YouTube, at the top of the capital of $ 1.5 million, the risk he was a year ago, Maker allows you to install more video, without waiting for the points and the cash roll in.

"This gives us the resources and the track that we would not have otherwise," said Zappin.

For other, less established players in online video, the money given them another reason to intervene.

A former executive with Tellem CBS TV entrepreneur Brian Bedol create Bedrocket media companies, manufacturing companies have achieved a few new channels of YouTube, including the network A. Financing "has enabled us or caused us to focus on YouTube before other platforms», Bedol said, .

Analysts believe that YouTube has made a wise investment at a time, ad prices for online video up.

YouTube can be successful only a few big shots - I think Rebecca Black "Friday" - even though thousands of videos fall flat. This is similar to the hit-or-miss to traditional television and film.

"The investment community does not look at it as money down the drain", Macquarie analyst Ben Miner said.

Since promising to share advertising revenue with uploaders most popular in 2007, YouTube has invested mostly original content by paying for equipment and training of new artists, but it was never more than that.

Save the new strategy, YouTube also has reorganized its home page to the priorities and recommendations of the channels just above the most viewed videos. Redesign allows advertisers to target popular channels or types of content easier.

The financing plan is on YouTube page of Apple Inc. When the car launched its iPhone in the App Store in 2008, a fund of $ 100 million seeds created by Silicon Valley investors, John Doerr has generated hundreds of thousands of new applications.

"Our developers are not software developers," the vice president of global partnerships for the content of YouTube, Robert Kyncl, at the Congress in January. "Our developers are Hollywood stars, the stars on the Internet, are ordinary people like you and me"

If nothing else, the introduction of tools to clean up the content never seen on any screen, big or small.

"Fast Five" Director Lin, who has teamed up with YouTube star Ryan Higa and Kevin "KevJumba" have to "YOMYOMF" channel stated that his goal is not to try to find an audience with the stereotypical Asian American content. Instead, the idea is to provide a platform for people who have unique voices, but still have not heard.

Higa said he and Wu did not follow the rules when they rebounded with a mixture of pop eccentric humor, brutal honesty and rap.

"They just do what they like, and people came," said Lin. "If we want to fail, I would prefer to go with this philosophy."

Cindy Crawford Pulls Plug on 10-Year-Old Daughter’s Modeling Career: In the wonderful person, a former supermodel Cindy Crawford said that her daughter Kaya Gerber will have to wait until 17 to be a model. "At this stage, she's too young to pursue a career. There are even a few jobs for a 10-year-old girl," Crawford said Daily. Crawford was initially enthusiastic foray daughter in the simulation.

Gerber, who looks remarkably like her mother, was a sensation when she posed for a new children's clothing line Versace in January 2011. On the set, Crawford said she was "not to be a mom ... on stage and make him nervous. She knew what I was looking at her. She does things with me modeling a small, but he was always with me, and only her. And I really wanted her to have this experience. Movies Perfect for Couples on Valentine's Day

Movies Perfect for Couples on Valentine's Day:I imagine many of you out there already have plans for Valentine's Day -- dinner at a fancy restaurant with your significant other, showering your lovers with roses, sending them packages filled with Hershey's Kisses (hoping for real ones), and maybe going out to see a movie. But last I checked, there are not many movies that will finish off a romantic evening very well at a theater near you.

"The Vow" looks unforgivably cheesy, "Safe House" doesn't look the least bit romantic, and "We Need to Talk About Kevin" cannot be mistaken for a romantic comedy. But if you and the love of your life (or so you hope) plan instead to curl up on the sofa with a DVD, Blu-ray, or whatever happens to be streaming on Netflix, these are the perfect movies to finish off a superb Valentine's Day.
